We first started working with Nicholas back when he was only seven years old. Within a couple of weeks he was capably banging out ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain’ by Creedence Clearwater Revival, singing and playing the song on his beat up three quarter gut string guitar at school assemblies and busking corners in Terrigal.

It has been an interesting musical journey over the past 20 years and we are proud to announce that ‘About to Fall’, the first single from his debut EP, is out now. If you’re a fan of cool, groovy guitar pop the likes of John Mayer, follow the links, add Nicholas to your Spotify and Apple music playlists and introduce his music to your friends.

We co-wrote, recorded and produced the song along with the accompanying music video at the Riversong Studio. Additional visual footage was supplied by American performer Cheetah Platt, who amongst other credits, is in the ‘Legacies’ series. The ‘About to Fall’ video will premiere on YouTube at 7am on the 26th of February. Subscribe to his channel to be notified when it’s going live.

‘About to Fall’ was handmade by local Australian craftsmen.
A DANCE IN THE YOUNG GRASS ON THE EDGE OF TAKAYNA

Fallen Angel is the third single from Melissa Black’s ‘The Eden Project’ EP and the third film offering from this Riversong Music family artist. The visual footage was bonus material captured in Tasmania in the rural community of Redpa, up in the young grass on the Nicholls family farm. This was all part of the extended ‘Merging with takayna’ and ‘Eden’ film shoot - an afternoon spent on the edge of takayna / Tarkine after spending days immersed in its heart. Country was definitely with us that week and for that we are truly grateful.

FOUR PRODUCERS, FOUR STUDIOS, FOUR VERY DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO THE RECORDING PROCESS.

This is an eclectic bunch of stand alone songs that were recorded with some of the producers Pale Riders worked with over the years. They are all quite different, but in the end, they all sound like the band because at the end of the day it is always about the songs.

In 2000 a young Nash Chambers (Dead Ringer Band/Kasey Chambers) recorded Mountain Creek in one of his first studios which was under his mum’s place at Avoca Beach in NSW. This was recorded as a demo for EMI Records.

In 1998 Black Bobs Crossing was recorded by Gary Frost (1927) at Warner Chappell and was for an ABC television production pitch, which was unsuccessful.

In 1993 Country Way was recorded by John Brewster (The Angels) early on before he produced the Moonsong EP at Mark ‘Bucky’ Collins place in Balmain. Country Way was one of the few that were demoed at Rondor when management were shopping for a publisher. The band ended up signing to Warner Chappell Publishing in 1996.

In 1999 Autumn Valley was recorded by Peter Blyton, Mr ‘Run to Paradise (The Choirboys) and was aimed squarely at the American market in preparation for the South by South West music conference in Austin Texas, a seek and find mission by management in March 1999.

“We learned a lot from these guys, what to do and what not to do but most importantly we learned that it’s all about the songs.” Scott Bird

The last recordings of Pale Riders which were done in a shed at Manno’s place when he was living in Woy Woy Bay, NSW in 2000. We were demoing material for the next studio recording, songs that I had written and that we had been working up live and ideas that we had been kicking around in rehearsal. Rough sketches and raw recordings which were engineered and mixed on a Roland 1680 by Manno in a shed. We didn’t really appreciate it at the time but we had come full circle because our fist dabble at recording was under Manno’s parents house in Penguin when we bounced back and forth between a couple of tape decks and added a new track on each bounce. It makes poetic sense in hindsight and is ultimately a fitting end to the recording career of a band of wild colonial boys from Tasmania.
Early in 1994 Pale Riders went into Damien Gerard Studios with Dave Steel in the producer’s chair and Russell Pilling riding shotgun at the desk and tape machine to track what would eventually become the self-titled album, also known as the ‘Rooster’ album.

Our friends, Mark Collis (banjo), Chris E Thomas (vocals), John Brewster (rhythm guitar), Paul Burton (double bass) and Dave Steel (mandolin) also joined us in the studio.

They recorded 17 songs which were eventually mixed at Eclipse studios with Randall Waller. Whilst mixing they also recorded Travellin’ Jack, the album closer.

This was an interesting period for the band. At the time of recording they were still in the ‘Lighthouse to the Cross’ phase of their sound but by the time they were able to raise the funds to complete and release the album they had moved into the acoustic-roots era of their development. As a result of this transition period, many of the tracks and first board mixes didn’t make it onto the album because they were trying to project their new sound more faithfully.

‘The Rooster Companion’ contains the 6 songs which didn’t make the final cut plus an additional 3 songs from the original track listing with alternate mixes and added instrumentation.

The guts were recorded live to tape, then the candy was flown in on the fly. They had an absolute hoot making these recordings which, at the time of writing these notes all happened just over a quarter of a century ago.

A feature collaborative piece of this year’s art exhibition is a series of work titled merging with takayna / Tarkine that involved body painting a model into the landscape at two unique places in the Tarkine.

The remote Julius River, in takayna / Tarkine was where singer and song-writer Melissa Black was painted into the base of the giant old growth eucalypts and where her music video captured footage of the transformation.

“What an absolute pleasure it was filming here, immersing myself in this ancient rainforest. I have never seen greens as vibrant as this before or walked a forest floor so soft. How lucky I am to have become such a forest, brushstrokes transforming, shaping, releasing me. We should never lose these beautiful places,” Melissa Black said.

“Many hundreds of artists have traveled to Tasmania’s takayna / Tarkine as part of our Tarkine in Motion artist field trip to document and capture the feeling of the landscape to share with the world. Our annual artist event is the biggest environmental arts project in Australia and exhibiting works in Melbourne is perfect for showcasing this ancient, wild and threatened place that needs to be saved,” Bob Brown Foundation Melbourne Campaigner Emma Wasson said

“Standing on the Tarkine’s majestic coastline stretching out before me and an amazing team surrounding me, the culmination of months of planning was coming to be. ‘Merging with takayna’ was taking beautiful shape. You simply cannot come to a place such as this and not feel change,” said singer song writer Melissa Black.

Melissa Blacks song ‘Red Blood Moon’ became the film ‘Merging with takayna’ which will feature in the Tarkine Art Salon. The exhibition is on show between Dec 13 to Dec 23, 2019, open between 10am and 6pm week days and weekends at the Australian Catholic University at 26 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.
Riversong Musictag:riversongmusic.com,2005:Post/63840852018-12-03T11:05:00+11:002020-10-14T18:14:15+11:00Eden from the wild west coast of takayna
Eden, heart, home, family. The balance of light and dark, the decision to feed the calm, nurturing white wolf or the raging wild black wolf. A tight rope walk which has led me to the wild west coast of Tasmania and the untamed takayna coast line. Brother wind is howling across the vast expanse of the Indian ocean, spurred on by the ruthless roaring forties until they finally crash into the west point headland. This is the place that has been chosen to capture the dance between light and dark. This is not a place for the faint hearted, this is where I have come to face down my demons and endure.

An old farmstead piano has been placed in a hollow amongst the weathered outcrops of stone and native grass. There is no sand, there is no comfort but there is a wildly invigorating sense of belonging as I sit at this piano which has borne witness to countless family gatherings and generations of music. A beautifully crafted man made object in the wild open takayna coastline. Human song meets nature song as two worlds connect.

Sister sun blazes down from a wind ravaged sky as the dance begins. My stone fortress projects a radiant warmth onto my back and sweeps into the fabric of my soul as the devil rides the wind. Sensual bull kelp pulses beneath a glassy inlet and wave worn pebbles massage the soles of my feet. My physical self joins with the land as our heart song begins.

This is my saltwater place. As I settle down at the piano it all feels so familiar, so right. My constant companion who has been with me through the best and worst that life has offered is rocking in the wind. It is exhilarating, it is an emotional connection which pours through my entire body. I am feeding the white wolf.

This location on the takayna coastline where the roaring forties drive the winds halfway around the world before they crash into this ancient west point has provided the perfect physical landscape for every word in my song. The castle of the heart, the rough sandstone under my fingertips and the devil casting its shadow, catching the crest of a wave and dancing on the wind. It is breathtaking, it is ferociously beautiful. Thank you takayna.

My career in music started in 1988 as a 19 year woman, where I kind of fell in to the role of band manager. I had met my soul mate at the beginning of the year in the Neptune hotel, a bar in the small town of Penguin on the north west coast of Tasmania and three months later I was living in Sydney with his band, where we played hard and worked harder. Later that year the band met a producer and befriended musician Linda Barnes. They recorded a single and cut their first record and embarked on a tour with Linda in Tasmania. They called it the 'Off the Rails Tour' which became a self fulfilling prophecy! The tour ended and the band was broke. To help pay off some debt I helped organise some shows on the west coast of Tas, where the people and nature are truly wild. I then flew back to Sydney, found a house to rent and created a new base for the band. An old roadie who was on the 'Off the Rails Tour' suggested I manage the band. The band agreed, I said ok, and that's it really. For the next 13 years I dedicated my life to the band, a three piece original act who were known as Oz-X-Press then changed their name to Pale Riders. During those years I wore every hat from manager, booking agent, A&R, record label, graphic artist, tour manager etc, and at times mother! I was surrounded by men, and I had some great male mentors over the years who became long life friends however there were very few women in my life over those 13 years. I think it was 1993 when I was recommended Wendy McDougall for a photo shoot and to this day we are still working together in the industry. This business is not for the feint hearted. I've faced a lot of adversity over the years however here I am, almost 50, still making world class music, and now film. Last week I travelled to Brisbane with Wendy for the inaugural AWMA's (Australian Women in Music Awards). It was a privilege to be at the event and celebrate women in music, and to be present to see Wendy win the award for Music Photographer. Wendy has been capturing the face of Australian music since the late 70's. When we first started working with Wendy it was all 'dark rooms' and proof sheets. She has been capturing the images that support our music for decades - Pale Riders, Riversong, Men From Earth project and now Melissa Black. Wendy's passion for music and dedication to the art of photography has led to an enduring friendship built on trust and mutual respect. We rejoice in her winning the Music Photographer award. I'm happy to say there are many more women in the industry now, but we still have a way to go to achieve gender equality. Remember, 'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together!' Check out Wendy's work on her website as well as the other winners of the AWMA's.

It is wild, it is rugged and it is again, breathtaking. The cloistered confines of the forest cathedral have been replaced by the great wild, wide open. Enormous piles of driftwood scatter the foreshore, testament to the relentless ferocious power of the battering elements. This is where the roaring forties drive the Indian ocean into the takayna coast. The forest merge was nurturing, peaceful, transcendent, this will be a wildly exhilarating release into the elements of fierce sun, jagged rocks and wind ravaged outcrops. I am standing at the edge of the world.

The sun is intense, the wild wind has miraculously abated as if the takayna coast is holding its breath and is awaiting the next instalment. Since leaving the forest a state of empowered grace has entered my body and I feel synchronised with the natural rhythm of air, earth, fire and water. I can feel the strength of the granite beneath my feet as I look across the vast unbroken expanse of the Indian ocean stretching beyond the horizon.

Huge swirling masses of bull kelp surge back and forth with the tide as the rhythm of the brush strokes and the click of the camera merge me once again into takayna. This is where the black tannin of the forest river meets the blue green ocean.

This is the completion of my ceremonial journey into the wild. I am one with takayna.

Australia’s largest temperate rainforest, an unbroken connection with the pre-historic world, a gift from a bygone age. We are standing in takayna, the Tarkine.

The cool crisp air is invigorating and breathtaking. It is substantial. The darkness is more than the mere absence of light. It has weight, we wear it like a magic cloak and prepare ceremony on a carpet of dewy moss prior to our first merge. Tiny tealights illuminate the faces of four women positioned at each point of the compass.

North, South, East, West we pick an intention card, read, acknowledge, smile. I have chosen some stones, black and white and assembled piano keys. A nod to my childhood piano which has led to me being in this quiet, ancient forest.

Yesterday we found our tree. Today I will become the tree.

Hush; there is a calm peaceful quiet as the cloak of night sheds its sleepy skin and gives way to the dawning light. As we journey towards our tree I feel totally supported in the embrace of this ancient forest, from the lush green carpet of moss beneath my bare feet to the enveloping canopy above. We have left the world as we know it and entered a truly sacred space.

It is a very cold morning. The cameras are set in position and the paints are prepared as I take my position with our chosen tree. A gorgeous, tall, strong tree. I take a breath, close my eyes and shed my skin. A bird calls and the forest awakens, the merge begins.

The forest breathes and I am immersed in the moment.

My heartbeat has slowed and is now a faint background thump as the brush moves across my skin. I can hear the synergy between artist and camera, a soft footfall, the damp paint, the click of the camera, the girls talking softly in a smooth rhythm which sooths as I shiver. My fingers softly stretch out and feel like roots on the rough bark, I feel powerful and grounded. I am becoming one with the forest and one with the tree. I am present, and I have merged.

Once fully painted I open my eyes, dappled light filters through the canopy and dances on the forest floor. The warmth is delicious as the rays of sun touch my freshly painted skin. A soft green carpet of ancient moss supports my feet as I glide through this wild place and explore my new chameleon form.

I walk amongst incredibly tall trees and stand beneath manferns that spread out above me like a fan of peacock feathers. The huge moss covered trunks of fallen sentinels bear witness to the passage of time as they slowly break down and feed the forest floor.

There is a breathtaking sense of clarity as the beckoning call of the ancient feminine pulls me deeper into the forest. Under the artist skilful touch, the merge is complete. I am one with takayna.

It is something that I needed to recognise and confront, to take away its power and simply see it for what it was. Stare down the self doubt, the fragile relationship we have with ourselves and conquer our fears. This is one of those ‘work in progress’ scenarios and this song helped me to start casting off the shackles of my own demons.

FALLEN ANGEL | My fallen angel is free spirit and wanderlust, the one who isn’t afraid to stand alone, the one who is always there by your side. I sat on the beach as the storm closed in, the harder I cried the more the wind blew and threatened to swallow me whole. When I pushed my hands into the sand my angel was there to guide me through.

EDEN | A song for my family and a reminder to stay strong, no matter what comes your way. When you are true to yourself and listen to your heart love will always ease your burdens and help navigate life's twists and turns. The dark forces are held at bay by the powerful protector of heart and home when you affirm your connection with nature not just physically but also emotionally.

OF MOUNTAINS AND SEA | A song for my partnership with the love of my life. Salt water and music has become our constant companions and love turns to magic near mountains and sea.

RED BLOOD MOON | There is a strong ancient goddess stirring in each and every woman. She is calling out to the warrior within to stand strong in truth, kindness, love and compassion. She is fierce, sensual and powerful. Embrace your beauty and inner strength and release the power of the feminine divine. The pulse of the forest beats within us all. We stand, we unite and we protect.

More than 250 citizens joined the Bob Brown Foundation vigil camp from February to June 2018. For two years the loggers have wanted to destroy these rainforests and tall eucalyptus forests but the Foundation and citizens have intervened to stop them. They moved into the forests in February 2017 and again in 2018. These forests were vacated on June 30 2018 so the endangered Wedge-tailed Eagles nesting there can breed. With two endangered Wedge-tailed Eagle nests in the proposed logging area, a logging exclusion zone will be in place from July 2018 until January 2019 to allow the eagles to breed. If the loggers return in February 2019 the Foundation will be back to stop them once again. For now, this forest home for eagles, quolls, wombats, owls and the world’s largest freshwater crayfish is safe. Sadly we have lost ancient rainforests elsewhere in the Tarkine in 2018 and logging continues, despite the protests calling for their protection. Enough is enough - the Tarkine and Tasmania’s unique native forests need protection for wildlife, environmental, economic and climate benefits. Stand with the Bob Brown Foundation to Defend the Tarkine - bobbrown.org.au

If we believe the propaganda of governments about jobs and growth, then after 20+ years of unprecedented logging why is Braddon (NW Tas) still one of the poorest electorates in the country?

Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy yet NW Tasmania has only seen an increase in tourism numbers of 1% in the past year. The Tarkine region is an incredible landscape, with such diversity and beauty. takayna | Tarkine protected will see an increase in prosperity for the entire community and real jobs and growth for many years to come. Industrial logging of native forest only lines the pockets of some and costs every tax payer money. May common sense prevail!

In Australia right now we are being asked to vote in a postal survey. The question is 'Should the law be changed to allow same sex couples to marry?' Yes or No. There are many who argue that this should have been decided in the parliament and not waste tax payers money and we agree. Many warned that a plebiscite would see hate speech and attacks on certain sections of the community, and they were right, this is happening.

We've spent some time researching both sides of the marriage equality debate and we are saddened by the amount of disrespect shown to one another from both sides. A simple question, essentially about human rights, about unity, love and commitment between two people, has resulted in so much division, in many respects driven by fear and ignorance. Members of our families have different views to us and that's ok. We love and respect them regardless of how they vote. It's ok to vote yes or no. We may not agree with the reasoning for a no vote, however it's not our place to judge anyone for their views.

We were compelled to enter the debate because we were concerned about certain propaganda and misinformation being shared by some organisations and individuals. Love is Love is an audio visual collaboration between New York photographer Braden Summers, singer/songwriters Chris E Thomas, Shawn Lidster, Scott Bird and Riversong Music. As artists, we felt that the best way for us to enter the debate and have our say was to create art. The result, in our view, is a simple and beautiful message that all love is equal.

Short film produced during Tarkine in Motion 2017
Over the Easter weekend, Scott and Trudi Bird took part in Tarkine in Motion 2017, organised by the Bob Brown Foundation. They were based at the Frankland River camp and were fortunate to spend time with campaign manager Jenny Weber, who explains the purpose of the event well in excerpts from a recent press release shown below:

“Our aim with Tarkine in Motion is to take artists into the place and experience its beauty, while also raising awareness of the threat by logging, mining and off-road vehicle damage to the natural and cultural values. Further to this, our goal is to use art in a challenging and inspiring way to raise the alarm that the Tarkine is threatened and inspire support for the region’s protection as a National Park, world heritage listed and returned to Aboriginal ownership.

“New aerial footage of the threatened ancient forests in Frankland River was captured over the weekend by Trudi Bird, showing the breathtaking beauty and rarity of these imminently threatened forests. Our campaign to protect these forests continue as we occupy the forests with a conservation camp and call on the Tasmanian and Australian Government to halt any proposed logging while these forests are still standing,” Jenny Weber

Our spiritual home.

We filmed the mudmen footage when we took the team to the property for the first time in 2014, prior to recording the Wldwood Echoes album. This was the birthing of the band! Over time we filmed various bits and pieces of the Valley; the drive in, the river, various nature scenes and then decided to put it all together to tell the story of The Crossing. Scott has given some insight to the song in a blog on the MFE site. Check it out.

It's been quite a journey piecing this video together and we want to thank our team Wendy McDougall, Andrew Beck, Georgia Martin and the men Tom Beasley, Luke Wright and Robert Patey-Downes for making our creative vision a reality. Also, a special thanks to Brock and Duncan at The Filmery for helping us out in the beginning of the edit. The Filmery team are an awesome bunch of people who make fantastic music videos. Thanks for taking the time to watch, like, comment and share....and connect with the wild places!

The studio space is up, running and recording. The label headquarters upstairs is now hooked up, dialed in and cruising and the studio project book is filling up. We have spent over twelve months and countless hours on the fit out and have trialed the installation extensively. We are bug free, the signal path is pure as the driven snow and the combination of old analogue and new digital is warm and smooth as a babies bum. We've created a great vibe with a clean, welcoming air-conditioned space conducive to creativity. By the time 2017 rolls out we will have either completed or be in the process of finishing off 4 EP's, 1 LP, a couple of singles and a bunch of masters and mixes.

We are keen to give your music project the time and consideration it deserves. Please don't hesitate to contact us and drop in to the studio. We've got a whole bunch of cool and groovy old guitars, amps and drums that get captured by a gang of old and new classic microphones, that then talk to the fat, warm, creamy old rack guys before they eventually get detailed by the crisp, clean new stuff.

Till next time, may your songs shine on, your strings never rust, your sticks never break and your back never ache.

Cheers
The Riversong Team
Riversong Music
